Melanie Warner is an Installation Artist based in London. ‘Sustainabilitree’ is her latest installation and has been produced as a commission for Stanelco Plc.
The Sustainabilitree is made from Stanelco’s corn and starch based bioplastic. Standing just over 3 metres high it holds 10,000 leaves made entirely by hand! The everyday objects visible under the bark illustrate the kind of products that bioplastics can now be used to replace.
The Sustainabilitree will be composted back into the soil at the end of its life and this is demonstrated by the leaves at the base of the tree that are already composting. A bit like a real tree in Autumn!
Facts about the bioplastics used to create the Sustainabilitree:
- These materials are both biodegradable and compostable and made from predominantly sustainable resources.
- It is a misconception that bioplastics decompose quickly in air. Bioplastics will last for years until they meet the soil in warm and wet condition where they decompose in months back into the ecosystem.
- Bioplastics have come on a long way and are now suitable for many objects large and small.

Hi Melanie
I first became aware about your tree on the SEO forum and now that this is complete I wondered what plans you have for this next? Perhaps a photo and comments in the AN would raise the profile of your project. Have Stanelco got any ideas? It would be great PR for all involved.
Good Luck
Bev
